It’s called a hotel and sort of is, but almost not. It is home to many, hell to some, haven to a select few, paradise to none. The building itself is not that big, it only has 3 floors altogether. There is bar. The accommodation itself is not too bad, it’s not 5 stars or anything, but you get to put your head down and if you’re lucky you might actually get some sleep. There are two payment options for students and those that fall in the grey area (actually I don’t think they even care who you are or what you do, just pay your rent, shut up, and life goes on….) if you don’t mind sharing a room with 3 other dudes (Or ladies, if you’re a girl) you can expect to pay R 490.00 pm each, water and electricity included. If you want a place to yourself, expect a good R 1 400.00 (est.). Bare in mind that either way these rooms are all the exact same size, give or take a few centimetres.
When sharing, they squash four of you in one room. Here’s the catch, guys share a two toilets and 1 shower per floor, same with the girls. When you’re lucky the water is warm, otherwise….
Get a room to yourself, you still use those very same showers. This applies to monthly renters.
Because this is still a “Hotel”, there are rooms availably for overnight bookings. There’s a bed, a door, a fan, a TV+DVD player, and a shower all in one room. A very tiny room. These rooms where in no way intended for long term accommodation, they aren’t used for that either.
I discovered all this as time went by. For me, the biggest attraction to Glou was the rent R 450.00 (2005) and the bar. Sharing a tiny room with four guys was something I would grow into, hardest part being that you share a bed with one of those oukes. Ya!
This isn’t an advert for Glou, or a platform to diss the pace. In time I will reveal all.
Glou started off as a great big jol, all I had to do was to keep working, get paid, go home. Glou was a home to me at that stage. In a strange way it still is, I still live there, for now anyway.
There are many wonderful things I can say about Glou. On the other hand, Glou has it’s moments. I guess it’s partly because of where it is.
